Raiders near top of BLITZ Baseball Power Rankings

In BLITZ Sports’ latest Power Rankings, the Habersham Central Raider baseball team placed third. Here’s a look at why, along with rankings of other area teams.

#1 JEFFERSON DRAGONS

RECORD: 21-1 (14-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #1

The win streak is finally snapped for Jefferson after 17 in a row in 2019 (not counting the end of last season). So what do you do when one streak ends? You start another. The Dragons are just fine, now winning four in a row after a 2-1 loss to East Jackson. The fact remains, only six times this year has the team given up more than three runs in a game.

PLAYOFFS: Locked! However, a region title hangs in the balance as the Dragons open a set with Morgan County (15-0 in region) for a winner-take-all 3-game series.

#2 BANKS CO LEOPARDS

RECORD: 21-4 (10-2)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #3

A current 7-game win streak has done wonders for this team, which has been so consistent all season. The Leopards appear to be peaking at the perfect time. This remains one of the top offenses in the region and state., and the pitching is equally good.

PLAYOFFS: Locked in for Banks County. At the moment, it has the top spot in the region at 10-2, but Elbert and Social are 9-3 on their heels. It should be decided by the final two games against Elbert this week. A sweep would guarantee Banks a region championship.

#3 HABERSHAM CENTRAL RAIDERS

RECORD: 18-10 (6-7)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #2

Habersham once felt like a lock for the postseason. But the all-too-well-known end of the season fight has come to the Raiders. Each of the past two seasons they have been this close. This time feels different, though. Four losses in a row entering the final pair against Lanier. At 6-7, the Raiders sit third in the region by a hair over Apalachee and Lanier, both at 5-8. One Raider win, or one Apalachee loss equals state playoffs.

PLAYOFFS: See above. Need a win in the final two games, and/or a loss for Apalachee.
