Facebook and apps restored after longest outage in social network site’s history

Facebook is back up and working after being out for much of the day Wednesday. The social network site and several of its popular apps experienced a partial global outage that lasted over 12 hours. It was the longest outage in Facebook’s 15 year history.

The problems started around noon Eastern time, with issues popping up across Facebook’s main site and its popular apps Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The tech giant took to rival Twitter to keep users informed. That sparked a series of tweets from frustrated Facebook users.

Rumors circulated online that the outage was caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDos) attack in which hackers flood a company’s network. Facebook tweeted that “the issue is not related to a DDoS attack.”.

Around 1:30 a.m. EST the company posted on its Facebook page “It’s good to be back.”

It was not immediately clear what caused the outage.
