Fayetteville, N.C. – For the first time this season, the Lady Lion softball team has had a player recognized by the league as freshman Becka Ross caught the eye of the conference earning USA South Rookie of the Week. The freshman infielder from Walnut Groove, Georgia went a combined 5-for-11 (.455) over four contests for the Lady Lions.
Ross was a combined 3-of-6 against William Peace in a pair of losses with 3 RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. The freshman was 3-for-4 in game one before being walked twice in the second contest and picking up a stolen base.
The doubleheader against the Pacers marked the home opener for the Lady Lions after spending the first three weeks of the season on the road.
On Sunday, the Piedmont bats heated up as Ross went a combined 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, runs scored and walks, as well as a stolen base. All three of her stolen bases came over the weekend as she is now 3-for-3 on the season. Also nominated for the honor were Laura Young of Averett and Eran Artigues of Meredith.
Ross has the third best batting average on the team at .423 having started all eight contests for the Lady Lions this season. She has recorded 11 hits in her rookie campaign with a team-leading four doubles, as well as five RBI and a team-high four walks.
Ross and the Lady Lions return to action Wednesday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex taking on USA South foe LaGrange. The two teams will square off for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
