A Cornelia man faces DUI and other charges in connection with a single-car crash and manhunt Saturday in Cornelia.
Authorities say Sergio Andres ran the 2005 Mini Cooper he was driving into a tree outside a house at 1799 Old Cleveland Road. Eyewitnesses told officers the driver, later identified as Andres, was traveling north on J. Warren Road at a high rate of speed just before the crash. They say he ran through the stop sign, turned left into the driveway, and was still going fast when he struck the tree.
When officers arrived at the scene, the 22-year-old Andres ran into the woods. Multiple law enforcement agencies including the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol searched for him. They found him about two hours later and arrested him.
In addition to DUI, the State Patrol charged Andres with disorderly conduct, hit and run, reckless driving, and failure to obey a stop sign.
