Life in Motion: Deputy pulls over for boy in mini police SUV

“I just asked him about his police car and I showed him my police car.” – Cpl. Adam Ivester

7-year-old Hudson Demore dreams of one day becoming a police officer. Adam Ivester says he wouldn’t want to be anything else. The two met by chance recently. Ivester, a Corporal with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, was on duty when he passed by the boy’s home and saw Hudson and his brother playing outside.

“I saw that little battery powered police car sitting on the side of the road and told myself if he was outside I was going to stop and talk to him,” explains Ivester.

Hudson was outside and Deputy Ivester did stop to talk with him.

Surprise visit

“When the officer pulled in, my husband and I were sitting on the porch and Hudson and his brother Brooks were playing in the driveway,” says the boys’ mother Hannah Demore. “We live right beside the road and just saw him slow down and turn in the drive. We weren’t sure why at first.”

It soon became apparent when the officer introduced himself and started talking with their son.

“He and the deputy talked about Hudson wanting to be a police officer someday and how Hudson likes all things police related,” says Demore. “Hudson is shy so he didn’t say a whole lot, but he couldn’t stop talking about it afterward.”

“I just asked him about his police car and I showed him my police car,” says Ivester.

Often when children see police officers it’s in bad situations. Ivester says that’s why he likes to take any chance he can to connect with kids. “Anytime I can stop and talk with kids, especially the ones who have dreams of becoming a police officer, I think it’s beneficial to them and to us.”

A boy and his dreams

When he was younger, Ivester says there were some really influential people in his life who were police officers. That set him on the road to becoming a cop in 2013. “I enjoy it a lot,” he says of his work.

That road he chose six years ago eventually led him past Hudson Demore’s house on a sunny day in February for a chance encounter with a boy and his dreams.

He told Hudson what he tells other children about achieving their dreams, “they can do it if they work hard.”

After their chat, Ivester says, “I just told him bye and he took off in his police car.”

“When we got inside, Hudson said he was going to tell his friends at school that he got to talk to a police officer,” Demore says. “We really appreciate him taking the time to stop by and make a little boy’s day like he did. It’s great to have officers like him in our county!”
