Beverly Ann Castleberry Winsness, age 73, of Anderson County, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at Rainey Hospice House following a brave fight with pancreatic cancer.
Born at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, November 23, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Charles S. and Edna Carlise Brown Castleberry.
Beverly was a graduate of Chamblee High School, attended LaGrange College, and on March 20, 1966, she married Denis James Winsness. During Jim’s professional career, they lived in Cincinnati, OH, Syracuse, NY, and Summerville, SC. While living in Schenectady, NY, Bev worked for the NY State Education Department. Later, they moved to Anderson, SC, where they enjoyed retirement living on Lake Hartwell.
She was a skilled wood worker, seamstress and gardener; but her first love was genealogy and she was able to trace her family tree to the Revolutionary War era and Mayflower immigrants. Beverly compiled an 8-volume set of books of her Caudell family genealogy and a 7-volume set of books of Segars genealogy. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Jim Winsness of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Bruce Droste of Denver, Co; son and daughter-in-law, David and Bridget Winsness of Alpharetta, GA; 6 grandchildren: Paige, Brooke, Kate, and Cole Winsness, and Benjamin and Lucas Droste; sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia Jane and Gilbert Bell; and brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Barbara Castleberry.
Beverly’s wishes were to be cremated and interment of her ashes be made at a later date in Mountain Grove Cemetery with those of her husband after his death, where her ancestors rest, in the LRWMA of the Chattahoochee National Forest.
