Community-wide reading event kicks off in February

One Book Habersham – Together We Read is preparing to launch its fifth annual community-wide reading campaign.  Organizers will reveal this year’s featured book and author during the Habersham County Board of Education Work Session on Tuesday, February 5 at 4:30 pm.

“It is so much fun to be part of conversations that One Book Habersham book selections have inspired over the years,” says Delana Knight, Director of the Northeast Georgia Regional Library System and OBH committee member.  “We are aiming to bring our community together through books, and are excited for the opportunities this year’s OBH book selection will offer to families and friends to share and discuss a story.”

After the kickoff, the OBH committee will distribute 300 books throughout Habersham County. They’ll put them in schools, businesses, medical offices, libraries, churches, book clubs and restaurants. The books will be available for children and adults to read and share.

The OBH Committee estimates more than 5,000 people read author Donna Jo Napoli’s book Albert during OBH last year.

Meet the author

Every K-8th grade student in the Habersham County School System will have an opportunity to hear this year’s author speak. They’ll visit schools on April 9, 10 and 11. The author will then appear at a community-wide evening event on Tuesday, April 9. The time and location will be announced at a later date.

The two-month-long reading campaign aims to promote literacy and rally the community around a fun, singular event. The Habersham County School System, Volunteers For Literacy, Piedmont College School of Education and Habersham County Libraries are sponsoring partners.
