Lady Lions Remain Perfect

Fayetteville, NC – The Piedmont College women’s lacrosse team scored two goals late in the second half to stay perfect in 2015 with a 9-7 win at USA South foe Methodist University earlier this afternoon.

Methodist entered the contest with a 5-0 record but could not pick up a win in its 2015 USA South debut while PC used the victory to move to 7-0 overall and are now 3-0 in league play.

Maggie McDaniel led PC in scoring with her trio of goals while McKynsey Douglas added two as well.  The pair are in the top five in the league in total points with Douglas placing 3rd in total goals with 28 so far in 2015.

Three freshmen also dotted the scoring list for PC with Caitlin O’ Brien, Logan Ruck,, and Ashley Brunner each adding a goal while Kayla Fruend accounted for the 9th. Cahner Manns had two assists to lead the way in that column also topping the charts with her four draw controls.

The win went to Piedmont’s Blake Forrest in the cage as she played all 60 minutes making two saves on the day to move to a perfect 7-0 in her first seven career starts.  Methodist’s Emily Ewin took the loss in the USA South decision.

The two teams were even with 15 shots each as Piedmont held a 7-3 lead at the half despite Methodist taking a 1-0 lead to start the day less than two minutes into the contest.  Freund’s goal at the 25:18 mark tied the score before Piedmont’s McKynsey Douglas scored less than a minute later to hand the Lady Lions their first lead of the game.

Piedmont ended the first half on a three-goal streak including a one man-up goal by Logan Ruck with 21 seconds left to extend the lead to four at the break.  However, Methodist was up to the task in the second half scoring four unanswered to tie the game at seven all with only 12 minutes remaining.

Three different Monarchs scored in that four-goal streak to make it a tie game at 7-7, but Piedmont showed great perseverance with Douglas stepping up to break the deadlock with a goal at the 9:30 mark handing the lead back to PC.

With the lead in hand, Piedmont’s Maggie McDaniel converted a Methodist turnover into Piedmont’s 9th goal just 73 seconds after the Douglas goal that put PC ahead with the Lady Lions going on to claim the 9-7 victory on the road.  The loss was the first of 2015 for the Monarchs and keeps Piedmont at the top of the league standings as one of just two teams in the USA South without a conference loss.

The other unbeaten squad in league play is Meredith College (5-2 overall, 2-0 USA South) who visits Walker Athletic Complex a week from today. The March 21 contest with the Avenging Angels is set for a 12:00 pm start and will be covered live on the Mane Event Broadcasting Network.

With the win, Piedmont is now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play in 2015.  The Lady Lions will get back on the field this coming Tuesday as Piedmont plays host to the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University in a rescheduled contest from earlier in the season after winter weather wreaked havoc on the PC spring schedule.

Opening face-off against OU is set for 2:00 pm at Walker Athletic Complex.  Live coverage, video and stats, will be provided courtesy of the Mane Event Broadcasting Network.
