Federal offices, post office closed for national day of mourning

Federal offices are closed today, Wednesday, Dec. 5, in honor of former President George H.W. Bush. The country is observing a national day of mourning for the 41st president who died Friday at the age of 94.

A state funeral will be held today at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. Afterwards, the former president’s body will be carried to Texas for a second funeral before being interred at the Bush Presidential Library on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station.

President Trump has ordered the federal government closed for the day.

Here’s how that may affect you:

  • Post offices are closed. There will be no regular mail delivery and only limited package deliveries.
  • Federal government offices are closed. Most federal workers have the day off with limited exceptions for national security.
  • All Social Security field offices and hearing offices are closed, but the agency’s online presence will be available to consumers.
  • The National Passport Information Center, as well as all passport agencies and centers, are closed. Appointments that were scheduled for December 5 must be rescheduled.
  • Some national parks may be closed or have limited services.
  • The New York Stock Exchange will suspend normal trading and the Nasdaq will also close for the day.

State and local government offices are open.
