Cornelia man arrested in Toccoa shooting

A Cornelia man is in jail charged with shooting a woman in Toccoa last year. 26-year-old Valonta Jamal Ochari Cantrell was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of aggravated assault.

Ochari allegedly broke into a home at 614 South Pond Street in the early morning hours of August 10, 2017. He then shot a female in the living room of the residence multiple times, according to the GBI.

The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment.

A 14-month long investigation by the Toccoa Police Department and GBI led to Cantrell’s arrest. He was picked up Wednesday without incident by the GBI and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office at his residence in Cornelia.

He’s being held in the Stephens County Jail.
