Sleepless is a crime thriller starring Jamie Foxx and Michelle Monaghan and Dermot Mulroney…and…and…Oh, who am I kidding? None of them can save this train wreck of a plot.
Foxx stars as a cop named Vincent Downs in Las Vegas who gets entangled in a case involving stolen drugs. He’s divorced and he’s regularly absent from his estranged son’s life. Never a good sign and too conventional. While taking his son to a soccer game, he’s kidnapped and Downs is left for dead after a brutal attack.
He later learns that the stolen drugs were part of an exchange that didn’t go as planned. Dermot Mulroney costars as the one who wants the drugs back. Michelle Monaghan plays a detective also on the case and she has a hard time believing Downs’ innocence considering his character is under investigation. Needless to say, none of them are having a good day.
Sleepless is a film that takes so many different directions at once. It goes from being clichéd to contrived. From lazy to ludicrous. None of the actors seem to inhabit this movie in the slightest. They all project the error of simply showing up for a paycheck.
The movie serves up endless amounts of filler that the filmmakers could sense they didn’t have much of a script when filming started. Even if it’s on late-night cable, it may put you to sleep.
We’re still in the month of January and I now have two films that are strong contenders for my 10 worst list of 2017.
