What a season it’s been for Habersham Central senior Donovan Curry. Anyone who’s watched him over the past two seasons knew this year would guarantee some great numbers and accomplishments, and Curry added to that with a decision on Wednesday night to commit to Troy University.
“I’m still keeping my recruitment open for the time being, but being able to say that I’m committed is a huge lift off my shoulders,” says Curry.
The senior playmaker has torched opposing defenses in 2018 to the tune of 469 yards on 24 catches (19.5 avg reception) to go with three touchdowns. He entered Week 4’s contest at Stephens County 10th on the state leaderboard with 344 yards…with his 125-yard, two-touchdown performance in the heartbreaking loss, Curry now assuredly has moved up (release of state leaders comes out every Friday, so unknown at this time).
But it’s not just about on the field that matters to Curry.
“Troy is top three in the nation for Sports Management, and that’s what I plan on majoring in,” says Curry on what sold him on Troy.
Curry put up great numbers in 2017 as a junior as well for the Raiders with 27 catches, 598 yards and 8 TD. He also got it done on the defensive side with 47 tackles and an interception and over 400 yards on kick and punt returns.
This year, Curry has 13 tackles (1 for loss) and two pass break-ups and has 237 yards on returns. Safe to say, his 2018 is halfway through and he’s already more lethal than a year ago. He needs just three catches to match his 2017 number.
As a player who has the talent to play at the next level on either side of the ball, Curry knows he is a valuable asset to any team. However, it’s clear that teams want to put the ball in his hands.
“If I compete and work hard for a spot, then I’ll have a chance to play early,” says Curry about when he gets on campus. “They plan on utilizing me by playing me more on offense and get the ball to me fast.”
Curry also held offers from Western Carolina, Stetson, Shorter, Tennessee Tech and UTC, and has interest from a number of other programs. Probably not coincidentally, Curry’s older brother AJ, who was the Habersham quarterback a year ago, is now at Western Carolina himself.
“I felt like now was the perfect time to go ahead and solidify this is the place I want to go before we start region play,” says Curry on his timing of the commitment.
The Raiders were up 28-7 on rivals Stephens County (who they haven’t beat since 1996) before the Indians staged a wild comeback with 34 unanswered points for the win. Curry’s news of commitment to Troy provides a boost as Habersham has a bye week this Friday. Curry and the Raiders return to action in Week 6 against Lanier on the road in the Region 8-AAAAAA opener.
