She lost her home in a fire, now Dorothy Mull of Clarkesville is in the hospital fighting for her life. The 63-year old Mull is in the Intensive Care Unit at Habersham County Medical Center where she’s listed in critical but stable condition. Mull was admitted to the hospital Saturday morning, March 7, after being diagnosed with pneumonia, strep throat and septic shock. “They told us in the ER to prepare ourselves, we might not bring her home, but she is responding to the meds and making improvements,” says daughter-in-law Shililah Mull. “She’s not out of the woods yet but she is making good progress.”

The family says Dorothy’s husband, 68-year old Randy Mull, is also battling pneumonia but is responding well to his treatments. According to the family, doctors say smoke inhalation from the fire may have contributed to the couple contracting pneumonia. The respiratory illness can be caused by breathing in toxic fumes and chemicals.

The Mulls lost their home on Tiger Paw Drive near Clarkesville in a fire on Feb. 19. It started in the kitchen and within minutes the wood frame structure was engulfed in flames. The house and its contents were destroyed.

Habersham County firefighters fought the blaze in sub-freezing temperatures.

Thanks to an outpouring of support from Now Habersham readers and the community at large, Shililah Mull says her in-laws’ needs were met. “We were able to buy them a trailer and get their dentures and everything they needed for their home,” says Shililah. She adds everything was bought with donations.  “All we have left to do is get the trailer moved and we’ve got the money.”

That move may be delayed by Dorothy’s current medical crisis but the Mull family remains forever grateful. “We are truly blessed to live in this community,” Shililah says. She extends her family’s heartfelt thanks to the community for the donations and prayers they received after the fire and asks the community to continue to pray for her in-laws as they battle to regain their health.
