History repeated itself Friday night in a 41-28 Stephens County win over Habersham Central at The Reservation.
The Raiders led 28-7 late in the first half before the Indians scored 34 unanswered points, including shutting out the visiting rivals 27-0 in the second half.
After a lightning delay that lasted some 40 minutes with 8:04 left in the first quarter, both teams found it difficult to get on the board until Tre’ Luttrell found Donovan Curry for a 17-yard touchdown, which showcased Curry’s athleticism on the catch.
The Raiders (3-2) struck again with a 55-yard touchdown pass to DonDon Bailey to go up 14-0 with 8:42 left in the second.
The Indians (3-2) finally got on the board about a minute later on a 44-yard touchdown run by Hudson Spurlock. The very next play however, saw Luttrell connect again with Curry, this time for 68-yards to push the lead back to 20-7 after a failed extra point.
It appeared the Raiders were set to put the game away when Tre’ Luttrell again went long distance to Bailey, 49 yards down to the one. Luttrell scored on a one-yard run, and then converted a 2-point conversion on the same play, making it 28-7 Raiders.
The Indians grabbed some momentum however with another Spurlock TD, this time from 43 yards out just before the break to close within 28-14.
Stephens County scored quickly in the third quarter to pull within a score, and Kenny Colwell’s 83-yard touchdown to Gamarion Carter tied the game with 4:13 left in the third. The Indians wasted little time in completing the comeback, scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter, a Colwell TD pass to Kamon Taylor from 36-yards out.
Up 34-28, Stephens County added insult to injury with an MJ Jones 10-yard touchdown to go up 41-28. The Raiders had first and goal inside the five yard line with about six minutes left to perhaps close within a score, but turned it over on downs.
