Sometimes we actively choose to rest in it. Other times we’re living in oblivion, blind to the mediocrity it conceives.
Complacency — a thief of potential and a robber of life.
Merriam-Webster calls it a “self-satisfaction especially when accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies” (emphasis mine). Scripture says it destroys us:
“…Fools are destroyed by their own complacency.” (Proverbs 1:32 NLT)
Suddenly it’s more than a lack of awareness. It’s a flaw of fools and a scheme of Satan’s to keep us from becoming what God sees us to be. It creeps into our hearts, travels to our thoughts and becomes a way of life — controlling our actions and destroying our dreams.
But we’re called to more.
Don’t be satisfied with where you are with Jesus — you can’t possibly get too close. Don’t be complacent with your career. God wants His people doing big things — running companies, making decisions, speaking into others’ lives. Don’t settle for a relationship that works just because it’s there. Don’t be afraid to speak up because your voice feels small — when God is speaking through you, your voice will fill rooms and echo across mountains.
And don’t ever get comfortable. Only get comfortable in the uncomfortable. It is there that we “will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead [we] will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.” (Hebrews 6:12)
God has big dreams for us — all we have to do is agree.
