Demorest, GA – The Piedmont College women’s lacrosse team picked up its fourth straight win to start 2015 earlier tonight winning 26-4 at Birmingham-Southern College in the final contest before kicking off USA South play.
PC was dominant in the victory outshooting the Panthers 38 to 10 and controlling 25 of 32 draws on the evening. The Lady Lions saw season scoring leader Mckynsey Douglas add to her totals for the year with a game-high seven goals while freshman Logan Ruck scored a career-high four.
Douglas scored two of Piedmont’s first three goals including one within 20 seconds of the opening draw as the Lady Lions held a 3-0 lead at the 23:13 mark of the first half. After Piedmont had gone up 6-1 following a score from Alexis Narducci, the Panthers scored two straight to cut the margin to just three goals with still 11 minutes to play before half.
However, the visitors went on a 7-1 run to end the first half to retake control of the contest going to the intermission up 13-4. Freshman Logan Ruck scored three of her four on the night in that 7-1 run to end the period while veteran Maggie McDaniel also scored three in that same stretch.
McDaniel and Ruck would both end the contest with four goals each with McDaniel adding three assists to her stat line as well, one shy of the team-high. Piedmont’s assists leader on the evening was another youngster in Ashley Brunner who collected four helpers.
Piedmont clamped down defensively in the second half allowing just two goals to the home team while tacking on 11 of its own for the 24-6 victory.
Sophomore Blake Forrest collected her fourth win of the season in the cage playing all 60 minutes making three saves on the night. The loss went to Birmingham-Southern’s Caitlin Dryer.
Piedmont was led on the draw by Cahner Manns with her six while Brunner collected five as well. Three Lady Lions picked up a trio of ground balls while freshman and USA South Rookie of the Week Francesca Malabad collected two to go with a pair of goals and an assist as well.
With the win, Piedmont moves to a perfect 4-0 marking the second time in the last three seasons that PC has opened at least 4-0. The debut campaign of 2013 saw the best start by the Lady Lions as Piedmont won the first nine games in the program’s history before eventually falling in the 10th contest.
Next up for the girls from Demorest is another away contest as PC travels to Greensboro, North Carolina to open league play against the Pride of Greensboro College on March 5. Opening draw in the contest is set for 4:00 pm on Thursday.
