For all of the excitement and hoopla that surrounds the first day of school, it can also be an anxious time for students and parents.Local first responders sought to make that transition a little easier this year. Personnel from Habersham Emergency Services (HCES) and city fire departments greeted families as they arrived at the county’s eight elementary schools on Friday.
Brian Phillips (pictured above) was one of 26 public safety employees who fanned out across the county to assist school staff in opening car doors and welcoming back students.
“We had a wonderful experience and enjoyed being able to participate,” says HCES Director Chad Black.
Habersham County Superintendent of Schools Matthew Cooper says Black first approached him with the idea over the summer. “I thought it was a great idea and agreed to the partnership without hesitation,” he says. “All of our elementary principals have given positive feedback regarding this new initiative. I expect that this will become an annual tradition in Habersham County.”
Cooper expresses his appreciation to those who participated on Friday. Black’s looking forward to next year.
