(Cleveland)- It wasn’t a simple task setting White County’s 2018 tax millage rate Monday. After holding the final public hearing on the tax millage White County Commission Chairman Travis Turner said, the county budget was set on the pretense that the tax millage rate would be 11.25 mills, but not all of the commissioners were in agreement with that millage rate when a vote was held.
Commissioners Terry Goodger, Edwin Nix and Lyn Holcomb voted no, that prompted chairman Turner to ask fellow commissioners, “ gentlemen how do you propose we fun it”, referring to the budget.
The commissioners continued their discussion on a possible millage rate. Commissioner Edwin Nix was the leading proponent for the lower rate, pointing to the better economy and possible increase in revenue, “ I think we have a possibility of, should be a little bit of revenue coming in, a little more than we’ve been expected,” said Nix.
After additional discussion, a proposal of 11 mills was also voted down. Then Commissioner Lyn Holcomb made a motion that the millage rate be set at 10.75 mills, .5 mills less than what was originally proposed and that received unanimous approval from the board.
The lower millage rate means that county staff will now have to find some areas in the budget to cut and come up with an amended budget to reflect the lower millage rate funding.
