Reader’s Digest has named Helen, Georgia to its list of the fifty “Most Charming” small towns in America.
“The Most Charming Small Town in Every State” appears in the travel section of this month’s online magazine.
“We are very excited that Reader’s Digest has voted Helen as their pick for the most charming small town in Georgia,” a notice from the city states. “Mayor Jeff Ash and all of the Commissioners would like to thank all of the business owners, residents and city employees who work may (sic) hours with much pride to make our city great. Your efforts are not going unnoticed.”
Shopping and pond hopping
The Reader’s Digest article spotlights the Bavarian feel of Helen’s Alpine-themed village. It urges visitors to “Wander through its cobblestone streets, taking in the Bavarian architecture with colorful buildings outlined in gingerbread trim, while enjoying German-inspired cuisine and plentiful shops and boutiques.”
It mentions Helen’s annual Oktoberfest festival and Christmas market.
“Helen is one of the small towns in the United States that will have you feeling like you hopped the pond,” writes Lynn Mettler.
Other small southeastern towns to make the list include Orange Beach; Alabama; Naples, Florida; Natchez, Mississippi; New Bern, North Carolina; Beaufort, South Carolina; and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
