It’s hot! Summer has hit with a vengeance and, now that it has, more people are heading to area lakes, pools, and rivers to keep cool.
Just a few inches of water can kill
While it can be refreshing and fun, water can also be dangerous.
The recent near drowning of a 3-year-old boy in Habersham County drove home those dangers. Fortunately, he survived due to an adult’s quick thinking and response. Not all children are so fortunate. Drowning is the leading cause of death among children between the ages of 1 and 4 years old, according to Safe Kids Georgia.
It doesn’t take much for tragedy to strike. Kids can drown in just two inches of water.
Whether in a pool or some other large body of water, or even just in the bathtub, children should be constantly supervised when in or near water. It’s also important for adults to know how to respond in a water emergency.
With summer in full swing now is the time to brush up on your water safety skills.
Watch and learn
Now Habersham recently teamed up with Habersham Emergency Services to produce this water safety video. It includes important information on how to protect your children around water and includes instructions on how to perform CPR.
Please take three minutes to watch it. Pay close attention. What you learn might one day save someone’s life.
