For the second time in as many days, strong thunderstorms rumbled through Northeast Georgia Monday. Damaging winds, cloud-to-ground lightning, and torrential rain swept across the region.

Several trees fell on GA 17 in Sautee but there were no reports of any injuries.

It was a much different story in Newton County where authorities say a 14-year-old Boy Scout was killed by a falling tree.

Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis identified the scout as Elijah Knight of Cypress, Texas, according to the Covington News. Knight was at the Bert Adams Scout Camp located about 8 miles south of Covington. Officials say the boy and his tent mate were inside their tent when the tree fell on Knight. He suffered blunt force trauma to his head and chest.

Newton County Sheriff’s Investigator Jeff Alexander says 50 to 60 trees fell around the southern end of the camp during the stormy weather.
