An 11-year-old boy was flown from Cornelia to an Atlanta burn unit overnight after suffering burns to about 30% of his body.
Habersham County 911 received the call around 11:30 Sunday night. Habersham Emergency Services, Cornelia Fire and Cornelia Police were immediately dispatched to the location.
During the response, an medical helicopter was placed on alert due to secondary information provided by the 911 Center, says Habersham Emergency Services Director Chad Black.
When emergency responders arrived they discovered the boy had burns to his face, chest, abdomen and hand.
“Adults at the scene advised the child had a lighter and bottle of isopropyl alcohol in the bathroom when they heard what was described as a loud noise, explosion type sound from this area,” says Black.
The boy was treated by Habersham Emergency Service personnel and transported to a landing zone set up at Cornelia Elementary School. From there he was transported by Air Life Georgia to the Burn Unit at Grady Memorial in Atlanta.
The boy’s name has not been released. His current condition is unknown at this time.
