Piedmont College President Dr. James F. Mellichamp will be performing a solo organ concert at the world-famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on Sunday, June 17. The concert will take place at 3:15 p.m.
The cathedral is a prominent Manhattan landmark whose original instrument dates from 1928 by the distinguished American organ builder, George Kilgen. Since that time the organ has been greatly expanded and now combines two instruments (Chancel and Balcony) totaling over 9,000 pipes played from a single console. It ranks as one of the largest and most important instruments in the United States.
Originally from Toccoa, Dr. Mellichamp’s concert career spans more than 45 years, and he has made appearances as an organist throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. His concerts include solo recitals at such notable venues as the Washington Cathedral, Berlin Cathedral, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, and London’s Westminster Abbey.
