Set in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is about the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl. She’s mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm.
Set in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, the story recounts how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town.
Bucket list
Anne is portrayed by the talented Katharine Ivey who went all out for her character and died her hair red.
Sheila Humphrey portrays Marilla Cuthbert. This is her first starring role after starting with Habersham Community Theater nine months ago as a back stage volunteer. Being on stage started as a check off the former educator’s bucket list but is now one of her passions.
When asked about playing such a famous figure in American literature Humphrey responded in her typical humble but confident manner, “It is a challenge because Marilla is everything I am not. But I love challenges and I am having so much fun.”
Director, Lindsey Brackett, beams with delight when talking about how Sheila has taken on the challenge of this role.
“Sheila has tackled the stoic role of Marilla with grace, dignity, and humor. She learns lines quickly and helps keep our cast of teenagers tame. I’m honored to feature her in this show,” said Lindsey.
