Water safety tips

Near drowning incident a frightening reminder of how quickly water fun can turn tragic

With the first summer holiday weekend upon us, Habersham County Emergency Services, the Sheriff’s Office and 911 Center, urge you to keep in mind the importance of water safety, especially when children are present.

Important tips to remember when around water include:

1. Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted and assure proper floatation devices are on for those who require them.

2. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult and pay special attention when numerous children are in the pool or water at the same time.

3. Empty all tubs, buckets, containers and kiddie pools immediately after use. Store them upside down so they don’t collect water.

4. Close toilet lids and use toilet seat locks to prevent drowning.

5. Keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed.

6. Install fences around home pools and have safety toss devices for those who may become distressed.

7. A pool fence should surround all sides of the pool and be at least four feet tall with self-closing and self-latching gates.

8. Know what to do in an emergency.

9. Learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a life.
