Eight people killed on Georgia’s roads during the long Memorial Day weekend

Traffic crashes across Georgia during the Memorial Day holiday travel period resulted in eight traffic deaths. That’s two more deaths than last year.

The 78-hour holiday period began Friday, May 25, at 6 p.m. and ended Monday at 11:59 p.m.

Statewide, Georgia State Troopers investigated 474 traffic crashes that resulted in 268 injuries.  Troopers also investigated four fatal crashes that occurred in Fulton, Wayne, and Chatam counties. Local law enforcement agencies reported traffic deaths in Cherokee and Cobb counties, Columbus and Thomaston.

State Troopers arrested 300 people for driving under the influence.

Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa worked 18 accidents in its three-county region which includes Habersham, Rabun, and Stephens counties. Eight of those accidents involved injuries.

There were six DUI arrests, 237 citations and 432 warnings issued by Post 7 troopers, according to GSP.
