Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp will be back on the campaign trail today. They’ll face off at polls in the July 24 Republican primary runoff. Cagle and Kemp advanced to the primary as the two top vote-getters in Tuesday’s crowded GOP primary race for governor.
With 99% of the state’s precincts reporting, Cagle had 39% of the vote to Kemp’s 26%. Military veteran Hunter Hill placed a not-so-distant third. The former state senator from Smyrna received 18% of the vote in the May 22 primary.
The winner of the July runoff will face Democrat Stacey Abrams at the polls in November. Abrams soundly defeated fellow state lawmaker Stacey Evans for their party’s nomination for governor. Abrams won with 76% of the vote. If she wins in November, Abrams will become the nation’s first black woman governor.
Statewide, voter turnout was light.
