Dec A Duck Contest winners announced
Due to recent excessive rain that caused the Soque River level to rise, ducks in the VFL 7th Annual Rubber Duck Race were unable to race on Mountain Laurel Day as planned.
“The river level made it too dangerous for volunteers who conduct the race to be in the river,” explains VFL Rubber Duck Race chair Johnny Bailey.
After conferring with city officials, it was decided to race the ducks on July 20 at 6 p.m. during the City of Clarkesville’s Red, White and Tunes concert at Pitts Park.
“We hope a lot of people who have ducks in the race will come to the event, watch the race and find out if their duck wins,” Bailey says.
The first duck to cross the finish line will win $1,000. Second place wins $500 and third place $250. Tickets will be sold until 3o minutes before race time and can be purchased from any board member, online at vflhabersham.com and on the VFL Facebook page.

Rain had no effect, however on the First Annual DecADuck Contest that VFL held on Mountain Laurel Day. Duck race sponsors were offered the opportunity to decorate a large rubber duck and vie for People’s Choice, Most Creative and Best Dressed Duck/Best All Around awards.
“Our 10 sponsors who entered were very creative and we had a lot of festival attendees come by, admire and vote for their favorite – People’s Choice – which was won by Tallulah Falls School,” says VFL Director Phylecia Wilson. The duck (pictured above) sat in “water” created with blue tissue paper and was surrounded by baby ducks decorated for character’s in children’s books by TFS students. Several students came by and pointed out which duck they decorated.
The Most Creative winner was Southern Bank and Trust. Wearing a top hat and carrying a black cane, their duck was perched on a foam “birthday cake” that had “Happy 200th Birthday” written on the side. It sat on a Habersham-opoly board where several duck race sponsors were highlighted with “Chance” cards glued to the board.
The Best Dressed/Best All Around winner was Elizabeth and Company. Their duck was painted white and dressed as a mermaid with pick shells for the bikini top and colorful string “hair” and sitting on the ocean edge.
Honorable Mention awards went to El Mexicano, North Main Credit Union, North Georgia Technical School, Knights of Columbus and From A to Zinc.
“We are hoping DecADuck will really catch on and that we will have more entries next year,” Wilson says. “And if it doesn’t rain, they will all ride in the Mountain Laurel Day parade.”
