Student arrested for alleged terroristic threat

A Habersham County student has been arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat against local schools. The sheriff’s office says School Resource Officers (SROs) received information Tuesday about an Instagram post that contained the alleged threat. They determined it came from a student at Mountain Education Charter School.

SRO’s contacted the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division for assistance. “This team effort resulted in the immediate identification and arrest of the individual responsible for posting the social media threat,” says Habersham County Sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Wurtz.

Jamie Garcia of Mt. Airy was arrested and charged with one count of terroristic threats and one count of criminal damage to property in an unrelated matter.

Authorities have not publicly identified the nature of the alleged threat. “It was a general statement and not towards any one school,” Wurtz says.

“Our School Resource Officer Program’s main purpose is to ensure a safe learning environment for Habersham County students, faculty, staff, and administrators,” says Sheriff Joey Terrell. “We do this by promoting a zero tolerance policy when it comes to threats to the safety of our schools.”
