The City of Cornelia will play host to 120 kids and eight teachers during a field trip on May 4. The end-of-year school outing was organized by Community Development Manager Jessie Owensby and teacher Anna Ferguson.
“Mrs. Ferguson asked me during casual conversation if I was interested in helping her organize it, and I jumped all over it!,” says Owensby. “May is National Historic Preservation month and I knew I could take the opportunity to teach the kids about the history of Cornelia. This is the third year they have visited us.”
The students will visit the Fire Department, the Police Department, Judge Wink Verdery in the Courtroom, and take a tour of the Historic Train Museum. During the second part of the visit, the kids will walk to Cornelia City Park where they will have lunch and play in the park.
The field trip will also help to satisfy a college and career credit for the students. They will learn about firefighters, police officers, and how the government works. They will also learn about the history of Cornelia, the train museum, and they will learn about economic development and job creation.
City officials ask that residents and visitors please be mindful of students crossing streets and using sidewalks on Thursday, May 4 throughout the Downtown and Municipal areas. Please drive cautiously and stay alert while behind the wheel!
