Utility crews are feverishly working to restore power to tens of thousands of customers in northeast Georgia in the wake of Monday’s ice storm. As of 4:45pm Tuesday, Georgia Power reported 1,141 active outages disrupting service to over 37,000 customers. 1,547 of those customers are in Habersham, more than 13,000 are in Hall County.
Habersham EMC crews are working just as hard. As of the same time frame HEMC reported 296 outages affecting 10,627 members. Most of those members are in Habersham and White Counties. In Habersham 3,305 HEMC members are without power while 2,621 are without in White County.
Scattered HEMC outages remain in Hall, Lumpkin, Rabun and Stephens Counties.
For those without power the repairs can’t come soon enough. Social media’s abuzz with comments from people across northeast Georgia who’ve been left without lights – and heat – for hours, many since eight o’clock last night.
There’s no clear indication as to when power in the affected areas will be fully restored. Utility crews face another long night of freezing temperatures which could cause left over water to re-freeze.
The National Weather Service has issued another winter weather advisory from 7pm Tuesday until 11pm Wednesday. The NWS warns the potential for black ice is high. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution.
