NGTC students help build Habitat house

Cody Smith of Clarkesville and Johnathan Smith of Cornelia were among a dozen NGTC students who helped with the project. Here they work on part of the HVAC unit to be installed in the new Habitat home.

The North Georgia Technical College Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program students recently partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build a house for a family in Lumpkin County.

Habitat initially approached the Lumpkin County High School Industrial Technology class to build the houses, and they reached out to the HVAC program at NGTC to help on the project.

“The students do everything from heat load calculation on the house to a finished, running A/C system,” says NGTC HVAC instructor Barry Benfield. “The students get the true effects of the HVAC industry with hands-on practice and have truly enjoyed every step of the way.”

The team has now worked on two houses for Habitat at Lumpkin County High School that were later taken to location for donation.
