Habersham County fugitive arrested

A Clarkesville woman who eluded authorities for three months is now behind bars. Pebbles Elana Daniel was arrested in Barrow County.

She was taken into custody by Barrow County deputies who located her after receiving information on her possible whereabouts from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

On January 25, a Habersham Sheriff’s sergeant was informed Daniel might be located at a hotel in the Barrow County area. “Sgt Jerrell contacted the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office and informed them of the information he had received,” says HCSO spokesperson Lt. Matthew Wurtz.

Daniel was being sought in connection with a case last year involving a Habersham County Detention Center employee who allegedly smuggled drugs into jail. The 43-year-old Daniel was among five alleged co-conspirators charged in the case.

Sherman Lee Fitzwater of Alto, Shawn Donald Bowden of Mt. Airy, and Benjamin Spencer Smith of Demorest were arrested in October 2017, along with former detention center employee Melanie Ziegler of Mt. Airy.

Following her arrest, Daniel was booked into the Barrow County Detention Center on charges filed against her there. She’s expected to be returned to Habersham to face multiple charges including conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, conspiracy to transport contraband across the guard line, and distribution of methamphetamine.
