Historic snowfall won’t stop Helen and Habersham Christmas parades

In show business they say “the show must go on.” Apparently, the same holds true for parades. Despite Friday’s historic snowfall in North Georgia – much of the region saw six to ten inches of snow – Helen and Habersham are going on with their Christmas parades.

The parade through the Bavarian tourist town in White County is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. The Helen Tourist Center says there’s a lot of snow on the ground but “roads are clear”.

A Storybook Christmas in Clarkesville

Habersham’s parade, scheduled to take place in Clarkesville this year, will happen as well, despite the unexpected snow. In fact, organizers say the snow will add to the event.

“It’s the perfect setting for a Christmas event!,” says Clarkesville Main Street Director Mary Beth Horton. “Downtown Clarkesville will look like a scene from a snow globe tonight during the parade and festivities.”

The Habersham County Christmas parade begins today (Dec. 9) at 5 p.m. in Clarkesville. This year’s parade theme is “A Storybook Christmas.” Line-up starts at 4 p.m. at the Habersham County Courthouse. The parade will wind its way from Llewellyn Street down Washington, and will finish up at the old courthouse (now county administrative building) on Monroe Street.

If you’re unable to get out due to the weather, you don’t have to miss the parade. Now Habersham will livestream the event on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/nowhabersham/ beginning at 5 p.m.

A Downtown Clarkesville Christmas

Glistening lights, carolers, a tree lighting, s’mores, Santa and more will all be on hand to greet those who stay after the parade to enjoy A Downtown Clarkesville Christmas.

The annual event usually attracts thousands to the downtown area for celebrating and shopping. This year organizers say they don’t expect it will be any different. Horton says shop owners were opening their doors early Saturday and said they were glad organizers did not cancel the event.

There will be extended shopping through the event lasting until 8 p.m. on the downtown Clarkesville square.

Horton says, “We invite everyone to come out and be part of the magic!”
