Road conditions worsen as Winter Storm Benji bears down on North Georgia

Heavy snow continues to fall across parts of North Georgia and Transportation officials are urging motorists to use caution.

Habersham County issued a Nixle alert shortly before 1 p.m. Monday warning that “Road conditions are becoming hazardous.”

Crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation spread brine on area roadways last night and today are working to scrape and spread salt and gravel in the affected areas.

“Right now the only closures that we have our state Route 348 Richard B Russell scenic Highway And State Route 180 spur up to Brasstown Bald,” says GDOT District 1 spokesperson Katie Strickland.

Strickland says the roads are closed as “a precautionary measure to free up resources in other areas. “We always close those first as there’s no residential need (for them),” says Strickland, “and that way we can focus our efforts on the state routes, interstates and overpasses that need attention.”

As of 3:30 p.m. Friday, Georgia DOT reported extremely high traffic volumes in the metro Atlanta area. “Traffic on the interstates is largely moving smoothly – but slowly,” states a press release issued by the department. “One major incident has been reported, and no routes have been deemed impassable at this time.”

Due to the high traffic volume, state transportation officials says drivers should prepare for a longer than usual commute this evening. Drivers are advised to consider all possible routes to reach their destinations. “Motorists are also advised to minimize travel in the overnight hours to ensure that Georgia DOT crews can treat and clear roadways,” the release states.
