You voted. They won. Now we’re recognizing them one more time. The first-ever Now Habersham Athlete of the Year awards from the 2016-2017 school year were recently presented to Emma Whitfield of Stephens County and Kahmal Wiley of Banks County.
They received a combined total of more than 4,300 votes.
Stephens County junior softball star Emma Whitfield won the girls’ award after a stellar sophomore season for the Lady Indians softball team, going 24-5 in the circle with a 0.92 ERA and 232 strikeouts. EMMA WHITFIELD FULL STORY
Banks County recent graduate Kahmal Wiley won the boys’ award following a senior season on the basketball court that saw him eclipse 1,000 career points and take the Leopards to the Sweet 16, as well as winning a region title. Wiley continues to recover following an Easter weekend wreck in which he narrowly escaped death and lost both legs. He continues to gain strength physically and is mentally remaining in high spirits.
Coach Mike Cleveland accepted Kahmal’s award on his behalf, and said that “only Kahmal could have survived that accident, as there’s no one that’s as strong mentally as he is physically.” KAHMAL WILEY FULL STORY
