Habersham County swim team places in top 10 at state swim meet

Team finishes sixth at Georgia Recreation and Park Association Class B/C swim meet in Tifton

The Habersham County Swim Team recently participated in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state swim meet on July 15th.  Thirty-seven of Habersham’s finest swimmers participated in the meet. They competed against 23 other teams from around the state.

The Habersham County team placed sixth overall in combined scores. Nelson Wilkinson, Obed Miranda, Joshua Martinez and Jesse Culpepper won the Boys 11-12 200 yard medley relay. Also winning the Boys 13-14 200 yard medley relay were swimmers Haydn Tatum, AJ Johnson, Logan Huling and Ben Tellano. That same team finished third in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The state record for the Mixed 15-18 200 yard medley relay set by Habersham Rapids swimmers Nick Stelmack, Hunter Weyrich, Virginia Griswold and Julia Nichols in 2016 remained unbroken.

Other relays to finish in the finals were: Mixed 7-8 200 yard medley relay: Nate Welborn, Caden Polley, Adelaide Tatum and Michaela Krippner (6th). Mixed 7-8 100 yard freestyle relay: Adelaide Tatum, Nate Welborn, Michaela Krippner and Caden Polly (4th). Girls 9-10 100 yard freestyle relay: Mia Hamon, Jaden Sullivan, Reagan Speed and Leah Culpepper (4th). Girls 11-12 200 medley relay: Aubrey Free, Amelia Johnson, Karis Tatum and Charity Lyons (6th). Mixed 13-14 200 yard medley relay: Halle Weyrich, Austin Thompson, Rebekah Hubley and Nathan Moseley (4th).  Girls 15-18 200 yard medley relay: Norah Griswold, Rachel Tellano, Virginia Griswold and Julia Nichols (6th). Boys 15-18 200 yard medley relay: Cody Weyrich, Hunter Weyrich, John Nichols and Caden Griffis (5th). Mixed 13-14 200 yard freestyle relay: Rebekah Hubley, Austin Thompson, Halle Weyrich, and Nathan Moseley (4th). Girls 15-18 200 yard freestyle relay: Virginia Griswold, Rachel Tellano, Norah Griswold and Julia Nichols (5th).  Boys 15-18 200 yard freestyle relay: Hunter Weyrich, Cody Weyrich, Caden Griffis and John Nichols (7th).

The Habersham County girls finished ninth overall. Leah Culpepper won the Girls 9-10 25 yard breaststroke and finishing third in the Girls 9-10 100 yard individual medley. Halle Weyrich won the Girls 13-14 50 yard backstroke.  The girls dominated the 15-18 50 yard butterfly event capturing three of the eight final spots. Virginia Griswold finished third, Rachel Tellano finished sixth and Julia Nichols finished seventh.

Other girls to finish in the finals included: Girls 9-10 50 yard freestyle: Jaden Sullivan (7th). Girls 7-8 25 yard freestyle: Adelaide Tatum (6th). Girls 9-10 25 yard backstroke: Reagan Speed (7th). Girls 15-18 100 yard freestyle: Virginia Griswold (4th). Girls 13-14 50 yard freestyle: Halle Weyrich (6th). Girls 11-12 50 yard breaststroke: Amelia Johnson (7th). Girls 15-18 50 yard breaststroke: Rachel Tellano (6th). Girls 13-14 50 yard butterfly: Rebekah Hubley (8th).

The Habersham County boys finished strong with an overall fifth place finish. Nelson Wilkinson won the Boys 11-12 100 yard individual medley and finished third in the Boys 11-12 50 yard freestyle. Haydn Tatum finished third overall in the Boys 13-14 50 yard backstroke. Joshua Martinez finished second in the Boys 11-12 50 yard butterfly.

Boys 15-18 50 yard freestyle: John Nichols (6th). Boys 11-12 50 yard breaststroke: Obed Miranda (6th). Boys 13-14 100 yard individual medley: Ben Tellano (7th.) ). Boys 15-18 100 yard individual medley: Hunter Weyrich (4th). Boys 11-12 50 yard backstroke: Jesse Culpepper (6th). Boys 15-18 50 yard backstroke: Hunter Weyrich (5th).  Boys 15-18 50 yard butterfly: John Nichols (7th).
