Police use bean bag round to subdue suspect in domestic dispute

Local law enforcement successfully used non-lethal force to break up a standoff with a man at a house on Linda Way in Cornelia early this morning.

Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith says the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute. He says when officers arrived at the scene around 12:30 a.m. they were met by a man who told them the suspect was threatening him with a gun. That suspect, identified as D.J. Lomax, was inside the house with a woman and two small children.

“Officers made multiple attempts to contact Mr. Lomax with no success,” Chief Smith says. The Habersham Special Response Team (SRT) was dispatched to the scene and established communication with Lomax.

“It was determined by the Habersham SRT that the use of a Bean Bag Round, a non-lethal use of force tool, was needed to take Mr. Lomax into custody for the safety of the officers and persons involved,” says Smith. He says no one was injured.

Lomax was checked out by EMS and transported to the Habersham County Jail. He’s charged with aggravated assault and terroristic threats. Other charges are pending.
