Cornelia moves forward with plans to revitalize downtown bank building

The Cornelia City Commission will meet today for a work session where the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) will introduce the contracting firm 4PM that will head the renovations on the old Habersham Bank building.

The building, located in the heart of downtown on Main Street, has been around for 117 years. In all those years, the building has changed hands a number of times and was deeded to the DDA a year ago.

The DDA voted last November to begin renovations on the historic building. The DDA benefitted from taking over the building as they were eligible for specific loans that the city was not.

In June of this year, the DDA signed with 4PM to complete the renovations. The DDA plans to break ground by the end of 2018 with a completion date in mind of 2020.

No word yet on what the DDA plans to put in the bank’s place.

Today’s work session at City Hall will begin an hour earlier than usual to allow time for the DDA presentation. The meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall. It will be followed by the commission’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 p.m. in the municipal courtroom.
