Piedmont volleyball earns 2016-17 AVCA Team Academic Award

The Piedmont College women’s volleyball team received recognition for its work in the classroom during the 2016-2017 season earning the Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

The Lady Lions were one of 822 total teams to earn the honor and one of 150 DIII programs.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

In total, 150 NCAA Division III women’s programs received this honor from the AVCA and Piedmont was one of only four USA South members to make the cut.

The AVCA Team Academic Award, celebrating its 25th year, is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients have increased every single year but two, while amassing a 532 team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award’s inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 822.

Piedmont finished the 2016 season with an 18-12 record in the first season under Head Coach Jamie McCormack. The Lady Lions also had the Libero of the Year in the conference, HALEY HIXON, who was one of three first team West Division USA South All-Conference honorees for Piedmont last season.
