Fatal Rabun County wreck remains under investigation

The investigation continues into an accident in Rabun County that left one person dead and injured five others.

The crash happened just before 2:30 a.m. on July 14 when a 1994 Chevrolet GMT-400 pickup rear-ended a 1988 Ford Bronco on East Wolf Creek Road.

The Bronco was carrying five teenagers, according to the Georgia State Patrol report. After impact it hit an embankment. One passenger was ejected and died at the scene. The State Patrol has not officially released their name. Investigators are still waiting on a positive identification.

The four other teens in the Bronco were injured, including the 17-year-old driver, Wyatt Bishop Wilson of Clayton. Wilson was lifeflighted to Greenville Memorial Hospital along with a passenger, 18-year-old Kurtis Ray Coates of Smyrna.

15-year-old Jon Charles Turpin of Walhalla, South Carolina, was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Another 15-year-old, Isaiah Friesel of Tamassee, South Carolina, was taken by ambulance to Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton.

The driver of the pickup, 22-year-old Jesse Reeves Smith, and his passenger, 22-year-old James Cody Smith, both of Lakemont, were not seriously injured. Jesse Smith was tested for drugs and alcohol. Toxicology results are pending.

The State Patrol’s Troop B Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident.
