The staff from Habersham County Animal Care and Control (HCACC) served as this year’s Glorious Fourth Parade Grand Marshals.
Since April, HCACC has been at the forefront of the investigation into an alleged puppy mill in Clarkesville. It was discovered by HCACC Assistant Director Wayne Higgins during a routine check on a barking complaint on April 12. More than 400 animals, mostly dogs, were rescued from the property of Clarence and Teresa Bramblett.
The case drew national attention.
As a result of HCACC’s efforts and those of the agencies and volunteers who assisted them, all of the animals received needed medical treatment and grooming and were placed in shelters and rescues. Many have been adopted into loving homes.
Demorest Mayor Rick Austin and his family adopted one of the dogs. He says the recent animal rescue highlights the important work HCACC does.
“A Grand Marshal should always be a local hero who has exhibited outstanding leadership and service to our community. Madi Hawkins, Wayne Higgins, and the rest of the Habersham County Animal Care and Control team are indeed heroes, particularly to each and every animal they serve,” says Austin. “Their extraordinary work and compassion shines through in their day-to day operations, as well as in crisis situations such as the most recent case that drew national attention. We are delighted to honor Habersham Animal Care and Control as our Grand Marshals this year.”
