Habersham County’s annual Relay for Life that was scheduled to take place at Pitts Park on Friday has been moved to the Habersham County Fairgrounds. Organizers with the American Cancer Society made the decision to move it due to the threat of inclement weather.
“There’s a high chance of thunderstorms at three different times during our event tomorrow,” explains Cameron Lopez. “That’s just not safe, so, we are moving it inside.”
Habersham County’s Relay for Life will now be held inside the Dewey Tench Pavilion at the fairgrounds located at 4235 Toccoa Highway in Clarkesville. It’s scheduled to run from 5-10 p.m.
The Survivor Walk starts at 6 p.m. Lopez says any survivors who want to are welcome to participate. “We want the community to take part and help us celebrate our survivors and caregivers and we just welcome everyone in the community.”
Money raised from the event will go to help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for cancer patients. Funds also are used for cancer research and education.
Habersham County’s Relay for Life is one of more than 3,500 held nationwide attracting approximately 2.7 million participants. Last year, Relay for Life events in the United States raised over 279 million dollars.
