Authorities may be closing in on a suspect
The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office has recovered the clothing that is believed to have been worn by the suspect during last month’s robbery at the Habersham County Landfill. The clothing has been sent off to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for testing, according to officials.
The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division also has interviewed a “person of interest” in the case.
The robbery occurred April 20, 2017 at 10:32 a.m. at the landfill on Dick’s Hill Parkway in Mt. Airy.
Surveillance video shows the suspect walk into the scale office and pull a gun on the clerk. The suspect – described only as a white, heavyset male – takes the car keys from the clerk, appears to order her to pick up the cash box and waves her out the door with the gun.
The clerk told Now Habersham, “I was nearly kidnapped.” Fortunately, she was not. The suspect fled in the clerk’s 2010 white KIA Forte. He got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The car had a dent in the driver’s door and Georgia license tag #REJ5794.
“We are still looking for any information from anyone who may have any information in this case about the weapon used, any possible suspects, or has any information at all concerning the case,” says HCSO Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Matthew Wurtz.
