Michael Van Hooser of Demorest, three-time captain of the varsity Indians, will join the NCAA Division I Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders next season as a preferred walk-on.
Van Hooser has been a critical factor in the Indians rise in the rankings over the past three seasons from eight wins as a sophomore to 24 wins, a “Sweet 16” state playoff team and a ranking as high as sixth in the state as a senior.
He led the team to 19 consecutive victories en route to a Region 8A Player of the Year Runner-up while scoring more than 1,000 points in only three seasons at TFS.
“Michael is one of the hardest working, competitive basketball players that I have been around and I believe that MTSU is getting a great player and even better person,” said Jim Van Hooser, head basketball coach.
“We are happy to have Michael join the MTSU family as a preferred walk-on,” said Coach Kermit Davis of MTSU, who is coming off of a second consecutive successful run in the NCAA Tournament.
“We are very proud of Michael’s school and basketball leadership and his legacy of leaving contributions to our basketball program,” said TFS Athletic Director Scott Neal. “We are hrilled he will take those same qualities to MTSU.”
The entire TFS community is proud of Michael and we look forward to seeing him play in the future,” Jim Van Hooser added.
