The need for good nutrition doesn’t stop when summer starts. That’s why the Habersham County School System is again offering free lunches to children and youth during June and July.
Habersham Feed-a-Friend is a free summer lunch program that serves children ages 0-18. The program is funded through the USDA’s seamless summer program and run by the county’s school nutrition department.
School Nutrition Director Andrea Thomas says meals will be served four days a week – Monday through Thursday – at four different locations beginning June 5. The only exception to the schedule is the week of July 4th; no meals will be served July 3-6.
Thomas says the meals will be mostly hot lunches “very similar to regular school meals.” Habersham County School Nutrition workers will make the meals and serve them. Volunteers will help deliver the meals.
No registration is needed and the program is not limited to Habersham County students, Thomas says. To participate in the program children and youth just need to show up at one of the following locations during the designated time:
- Meadowbrook Community Center, 830 West Airport Road, Baldwin in the community room next to the laundromat from 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
- Cornelia Elementary School, 375 Old Cleveland Road, Cornelia in the school cafeteria 12:30 p.m.-1 p.m.
- Cornelia Public Library, 301 N Main Street, Cornelia 10:30 a.m.-11 a.m.
- Whispering Woods Mobile Home Park/Garden Gate Apartments in Coin Laundry, 230 Wayside Street, Cornelia 11:05 a.m.-11:35 a.m.
