ATV accident claims life of 6-year old Clayton girl

Funeral services are scheduled Friday for a 6-year old Clayton girl who died over the weekend in an ATV accident.

Emily Faith Thompson was fatally injured Saturday when the all terrain vehicle she was a passenger on fell on top of her.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the Polaris MV7 ATV was traveling west on a paved parking area at 106 Carson Lane in Tiger when it suddenly accelerated towards a parked truck. The 16-year old boy driving the ATV steered left. The ATV overturned onto its left side and Thompson, who was sitting in front of the driver, struck the ground. The ATV then landed on top of her.

GSP says there was no evidence of reckless driving.

The teen driver told authorities Thompson pressed the accelerator. He tried to remove her hand from the accelerator and steered left to avoid a collision.

The teen’s mother witnessed the crash. She told investigators she observed the ATV rapidly gain speed just prior to the accident. Authorities checked the ATV and say no obvious mechanical defects were found.

Family tribute

Thompson is the only daughter of Lisa and Jim Thompson. She’s survived by her parents and two brothers. Her maternal grandmother and great-grandmother – Hilda and Fannie Pruitt, respectively – are from Habersham.

Emily’s obituary reflects a young girl who was spirited and enthusiastic about life.

“Known for her contagious smile and perfect cartwheels she loved big and everything was exciting,” her obituary reads. “She loved being a Rabun County Wildcat and had a love for cheerleading, basketball, and soccer. Emily enjoyed going fishing with her daddy and getting her nails done with her mommy especially the days when she was able to do both.”
