Pair of Piedmont Athletes Earn USA South Athlete of the Week Honors

The USA South Athletic Conference has released its weekly Athlete of the Week honor roll with SAM CARPENTER earning Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week while JULIANNA SURGENT taking Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.


The USA South Athletic Conference announces its weekly honor roll each Monday and at least half of the teams in a sport must have competed within the previous week for honors to be awarded.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
SAM CARPENTER, Piedmont – The freshman from Gainesville, Georgia picked up a no-decision in a 3-2 victory over USA South foe Covenant in his only appearance on the mound for the Lions last week. Carpenter started and pitched eight innings, allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits with zero walks and five strikeouts. Also Nominated: Anthony Rodriguez, Maryville; Ross Skipper, Covenant; Sawyer Smith, Averett.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
JULIANNA SURGENT, Piedmont – The Huntingtown, Maryland senior midfielder totaled ten draw controls, eight caused turnovers, seven ground balls and two goals in a 1-1 week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In a 17-6 win over LaGrange, Surgent notched six draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers with two goals. In a 15-7 loss to Meredith, Surgent totaled four draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Also Nominated: Sarah Ewin, Methodist; Victoria Krupa, Meredith.
