Mt. Airy man charged with DUI in Camp Creek Road wreck

Driver said he was attempting make phone call when wreck happened

A Mt. Airy man faces DUI and other charges in connection with a wreck that happened this morning on Camp Creek Road. The accident happened just after 9 a.m. near Star Electric in Cornelia.

Sgt. David Lunsford with the Georgia State Patrol says 37-year old Joseph Reed was driving a Ford Fusion eastbound on Camp Creek in the westbound lane negotiating curve. While Reed was on the wrong side of the road, the right front bumper of his vehicle struck the right front bumper of a KIA Soul driven by 61-year old Carolyn Waldon of Cornelia.

The impact caused Reed’s car to rotate and sent Waldon’s vehicle down an embankment on the opposite side of the road. Waldon’s vehicle then struck a tree with the right rear bumper before coming to a stop.

Lunsford says Reed indicated he was attempting to make a cellphone call when the accident happened.

Both drivers were injured. Waldon was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Reed was taken to Habersham County Medical Center in Demorest. Information on the extent of their injuries was not immediately available.

Reed is charged with driving on the wrong side of the roadway, DUI, no seatbelt and serious injury by motor vehicle.
