Dr. James F. Mellichamp will present an organ concert of Baroque classics from the 17th and 18th centuries at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 2, 2017, in the Piedmont College Chapel in Demorest.
The free concert will feature 10 works by English, French, and German composers of the Baroque Period (1600–1750), including John Stanley, William Boyce, G.F. Handel, Claude Balbastre, Jean-François Dandrieu, Dietrich Buxtehude, and Johann Sebastian Bach.
Dr. Mellichamp is president and professor of music at Piedmont and will perform on the college’s Sewell Pipe Organ, constructed in 2002 by Casavant Frères of Ste. Hyacinthe, Quebec. The organ features some 3,691 pipes and was designed by Mellichamp and Casavant to emulate a variety of organ styles, including French, English, and German.
Originally from Toccoa, Dr. Mellichamp’s concert career spans more than 40 years, and he has made appearances as an organist throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His concerts include solo recitals at such notable venues as the Washington Cathedral, Berlin Cathedral, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, and London’s Westminster Abbey.
